GamePen.com
These folks know what's going on in the gaming world. The legendary site that has news, downloads in a section called "CrADLe," ways to radically improve your game in Cheatme, and reviews. Since multiplayer games are just now building to critical mass, visit GamePen's very helpful list of multiplayer providers.

Games Domain
One of the most popular bookmarks on the Web, Games Domain brings in more than 25 million gamers a month. The site - based in the UK and now owned by once-rival Happy Puppy - specializes in game FAQs, patches (small software fixes to games), downloadable games, and walkthroughs (ways to cheat!). Much material here is supplied by users. The Freebees section brings together a lot of online tests and contests at different sites. It's not easy to find things with the GD interface, so the search engine - which can understand the connectors AND, OR - may be your best bet:

BJP Interactive's new Web contests "Out of Order" and "Strike a Match." You have to download the PC plug-in to play.

Happy Puppy
The first Web project from the Attitude Network - started by ESPN founder Bill Rasmussen, but the game FAQs and walkthroughs are by another guy who goes by the name of Lord Sloth. Read the Wired News coverage of a recent Happy Puppy games acquisition, "Happy Puppy Snaps Up Games Domain".

Grover of Sesame Street fame presides over Greg Chance's loving homage to vintage cartridge games. Arranged by year or alphabetically, each platform links to pictures of the old hardware, a complete list of games, and online instruction manuals. For more data on the vintage cart revival, see "Zen and the Art of Videogames: The Revival of Classic Simplicity" in Wired 3.11.

The "Wiretap" - Arcade Game Collector's Archive
Says HotWired interface designer Mike Kuniavsky, who recently restored an old Stargate machine: "For hardcore arcade game geeks, there's only one place to look. It's not pretty, but it's super informative."

You Don't Know Jack - The Netshow
Based on the trivia CD-ROM, You Don't Know Jack came on the Web this winter and has 100,000 players already. You have to register and download a plug-in to play - and for now, it only runs under Windows 95.

ZDNet Games
A tour de force of ZDNet's Web offerings - Computer Gaming World, Tips and Cheats, Videogame Spot, and Game Spot (PC Games), as well as the software library. Their reviews directory lets you search by category or through their search. Note: sometimes you have to hit "Search" twice - it's a long way to ZDNet.
